Underwater Drone Concept Exploration

For this project, our studio has carried out research on various concepts of underwater drones. The main task was to find the most efficient layout of the device, combining hydrodynamics, functionality and expressive industrial design.

Research

Work on the project began with the study of various types of underwater vehicles. We considered several fundamentally different architectures.:

  • bionic enclosures inspired by marine animals;
  • classic torpedo tubes;
  • modular designs;
  • compact inspection ROVs;
  • vehicles with integrated ring thrusters;
  • experimental schemes with different engine and chamber layouts.

Each concept was evaluated in terms of hydrodynamics, ease of use, equipment placement, and visual identity of the future product.


Concepts

After analyzing the various options, several independent concepts were developed.

For each of them, the following tasks were performed:

  • search thumbnails;
  • defining the overall architecture;
  • elaboration of proportions;
  • engine placement options;
  • location of cameras and light modules;
  • steering surface options;
  • study of various traffic patterns.

This approach allowed the customer to compare different directions of the project development and choose the most promising solution.


3D Modeling

After selecting the four final versions, each concept was converted into a digital three-dimensional model.

At this stage, it was clarified:

  • body shape;
  • volumes;
  • hydrodynamic surfaces;
  • location of propellers;
  • surveillance cameras;
  • product balance;
  • visual identity.

Three-dimensional models allowed us to evaluate the future product with a high degree of realism even before the transition to engineering development.


Engineering study

After the final version was approved, the engineering preparation of the product was carried out.

The works included:

  • development of the hull design;
  • the layout of the internal modules;
  • creating a CAD model;
  • preparation of production documentation;
  • release of assembly drawings.

Project Features

  • development of several independent design concepts;
  • research of various architectures of underwater vehicles;
  • transition from sketches to digital models;
  • comparison of alternative solutions;
  • preparation of engineering documentation;
  • project support to the production stage.

Result

As a result of the project, the customer received several fully developed concepts of underwater drones made in the form of three-dimensional models. After selecting the final version, the engineering documentation necessary for the manufacture of the product was created.
