For Ontek, our studio has completed a full cycle of industrial design of an electromagnetic melt mixer (EMF), a specialized equipment used in the metallurgical industry for non—contact mixing of liquid metal.
Unlike most projects where it is only necessary to create the appearance of the product, the work here began with an in-depth study of the principle of operation of the equipment, operating conditions and features of its installation on melting furnaces. The electromagnetic mixer is installed outside the furnace — on the side or under the bottom — and creates a powerful magnetic field that drives the molten metal through the lining layer without any mechanical contact with the melt. It was the features of this technology that determined almost all the design limitations of the future product.
The project included several stages of development. First, preliminary searches for the shape and dozens of body layout options were performed. At this stage, various proportions, the location of ventilation ducts, the shape of the side surfaces, options for protective covers and color solutions were investigated. After selecting the optimal concept, a detailed three-dimensional model of the product was created, which made it possible to evaluate the appearance of the equipment in real production conditions.
Special attention was paid not to the decorative component, but to the industrial functionality. The case was supposed to provide ease of maintenance, quick access to internal components, efficient cooling, protection of equipment from harsh conditions of the foundry, and at the same time create a modern technological image of the company's products. It is this approach that distinguishes industrial design from the usual case design.
On the presented materials, you can see the entire product development process: from the first sketches and shape search to various color options, creating a three-dimensional model, checking the layout and preparing visualizations for presentation to the customer. After the design was approved, images of various options for installing equipment in production were created, which made it possible to evaluate its integration into existing production lines even before the prototype was manufactured.
This approach significantly reduces the cost of developing new equipment. The customer gets the opportunity to evaluate the appearance of the product in advance, make changes at the digital stage, prepare promotional materials and catalogs even before the start of production.
